If a bright or overly busy screen is difficult for you to use, please consider making the following adjustments to your computer settings to have a better experience. If you need additional assistance implementing any or all of these solutions, please reach out to the ODE Help Desk by sending an email to the Help Desk or calling them at 947-5915.

  1. Install an extension to Chrome and/or Edge called “Dark Reader.” The icon for this extension looks like a robot. It will turn all web pages black and adjust the font color appropriately.

  2. Use the Microsoft 365/web version of Outlook for your mail. In combination with Dark Reader, this changes all your mail background to black.Using the magnifying glass next to the windows button, search for brightness.

  3. Choose “Change screen brightness”. Move the slider down until your eyes relax. Also, and this is important, UNCHECK the box under the slider.

  4. If you use a monitor or monitors in addition to your laptop, change the brightness level of those as well.

  5. Using the magnifying glass again, search for Background and open the control panel. In that screen:

    • Choose a background color or image that is dark.

    • On the Colors page, change your color to Dark from the list.

    • On the Lock screen page, change your picture to something dark.

  6. When appropriate, ask that fellow participants in a meeting also change their background to a dark picture. There are pictures of all kinds free to use from Pixabay.
